Tumaini La Maisha (TLM) is proud to announce its official charity partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Global Alliance, a worldwide network of organizations united in the mission to advance cancer care to children with cancer. We further wish to congratulate Muhimbili National Hospital and Bugando Medical Centre for their recent official Medical Institutional Partnership agreement with the same Global Alliance.
This recognition is a tribute to the tireless efforts of our pediatric oncologists, nurses, allied health professionals, social staff, the Tanzanian Ministry of Health, 2 of our partner hospitals: Muhimbili National Hospital and Bugando Medical Centre, as well as all our staff, volunteers, donors and friends who work hand in hand to ensure that children with cancer in Tanzania have a fighting chance.
The milestone comes at a crucial time, as we approach Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September. It marks both a celebration of progress and a powerful reminder of the urgent work still ahead. In Tanzania, thousands of children are diagnosed with cancer each year, yet far too many go undiagnosed or untreated. By joining forces with St. Jude Global, one of the most respected pediatric cancer research hospitals in the world, this partnership will provide access to invaluable global expertise, research, training opportunities, and collaborative networks that will directly improve survival rates and care for children in Tanzania.
“This partnership with St. Jude has the potential to be transformative,” said Dr. Trish Scanlan, CEO of TLM. “We are confident it will lead to developments so that children in Tanzania will be diagnosed earlier, treated more effectively, and supported more holistically. By connecting our hospitals to the expertise and resources of St. Jude and its global network, we are giving every child with cancer here a better chance of survival and a real chance at life.”
As a member of the St. Jude Global Alliance, TLM and its hospital partners join more than 300 members across over 80 countries, ensuring that Tanzania is part of a worldwide mission to find cures and save children, regardless of where they live.
As the Global Community turns its attention to raising awareness to childhood cancer this September, Tumaini La Maisha, Muhimbili National Hospital, Bugando Medical Center, and St. Jude together reaffirm their commitment: no child should suffer or die unnecessarily from Cancer – anywhere in the world.
About St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital:
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, is one of the world’s most respected non-profit institutions in paediatric oncology, treats approximately 8,600 children each year, including many from across the globe and has helped increase childhood cancer survival rates in the United States from 20% to 80%.
About Tumaini La Maisha (TLM):
Tumaini La Maisha is a local NGO dedicated to building a national service where every child with cancer has access to free, quality treatment and support. In 2024, TLM enrolled over 1,000 new cases, providing lifesaving services to families who would otherwise be unable to afford care. Relying entirely on donations and partnerships, TLM’s work makes it possible for children, especially those from low-income and remote communities to complete the difficult journey of cancer treatment.
TLM invites individuals, companies, and organisations to stand with us during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and beyond. The support whether through donations, partnerships, or volunteering will directly help TLM to provide lifesaving treatment, nutrition and psychosocial support for children and their families.
