Masunga’s Journey
A little warriors journey.

Masunga today, growing well, full of life, and back to learning his ABCs.
“A story of fear to hope”
At just 2 years and 1 month old, Masunga is a bright and joyful little boy from Nyangao village in the Lindi region of southern Tanzania – more than 450 kilometers from Dar es Salaam. He is the second-born child in a loving family of two children.
Masunga’s story is one of courage, resilience, and hope in the face of unimaginable challenges
About a year ago, his parents noticed an unusual swelling in his abdomen. Concerned for their little boy, they rushed him to the nearest health centre. Initially, doctors believed the swelling was caused by an enlarged spleen, and he was given medication. But weeks passed without improvement. Instead, the swelling continued to grow, and Masunga became increasingly uncomfortable and unwell.
Determined to find answers, his family travelled from one hospital to another in search of help. It was a long and painful journey filled with fear, uncertainty, and emotional exhaustion. Watching such a young child suffer without understanding the cause was heartbreaking for the family.
After seven difficult months, Masunga was finally referred to Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam. There, with support from Tumaini La Maisha, he was able to undergo the investigations and treatment he urgently needed.
Doctors discovered that Masunga had a Wilms tumor – a type of kidney cancer that primarily affects young children. The tumor was located on the left side of his abdomen.
Masunga immediately began pre-operative chemotherapy alongside nutritional support to help strengthen his body. Following successful surgery to remove the tumor, he bravely continued with post-operative chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Today, the transformation in Masunga’s condition is truly incredible. The little boy who once lived in pain and uncertainty is now smiling again, growing stronger every day, and bringing hope to everyone around him.
Masunga’s journey is a powerful reminder that early diagnosis, access to specialised care, and compassionate support can save lives. His story also highlights the vital work of Tumaini La Maisha and dedicated healthcare teams who continue to fight for children with cancer across Tanzania.
Masunga’s recovery was made possible by everyone who has donated to TLM. Through your generosity, we were able to provide the nutritional support and treatment assistance that carried her through. Thank you.
